The primary purpose of your home's gutter system is to direct the water shedding off of your roof away from the foundation and prevent erosion.
A 1,500 square foot roof will shed approximately 940 gallons of water in a 1" rainstorm. Assuming that the water flows freely out of an average of 4 downspouts, you will have 235 gallons of water being directed away from the foundation of your home through each of the 4 downspouts.
Functional gutters should not leak, drip or over spill during a rainstorm. They should be flush against your fascia board without drooping and be free of debris.
